Working with turf focuses on the preparation and maintenance of grasses and lawn areas used for sports and recreation. The work may require early starts, working weekends and skills in the operation of specialist machinery and equipment. At the supervisory and management levels there is also emphasis on greens reconstruction and renovation, irrigation management, chemical use and healthy turf growth. Managers are responsible for budgets and may have to report to club committees.

Other areas of work in the turf sector include the commercial growing and supply of turf for homes and businesses, and mowing and lawn maintenance operations.

Some common jobs in the sector include greenkeeper, race course attendant, sports oval curator, bowling green/ golf course attendant, golf course superintendent, turf equipment technician and course manager.
